Lunita Loft

In October 2022, and under very unique circumstances that would only happen in New York (probably) we took over a beautiful loft in our apartment building. Knowing that physical space is a premium in the city, we’ve hustled ever since to make it work as a multi-purpose, mutual-aid driven community space. Lunita Loft has hosted every type of community event – including art shows, performances, workshops, classes, maker fairs, readings, and more. We have also hosted over 150 guests from all over the world.

Lunita Loft’s mission is to:

  • provide an accessible platform for local and incarcerated artists
  • host meeting spaces for local volunteer organizations and community groups (we are the official physical home-base for the Prison Library Support Network.)
  • act as a non-profit venue for performing artists, photographers, and other artistic professionals

Lunita Loft’s art shows have featured the work of local artists (including several photography shows, one art show in recognition of women’s history month, and shows raising awareness and funds for incarcerated artists). We’re also the official home of the Here & Now Art Collective. Beyond art shows, we have hosted performances of all kinds – including a debut of traditional string compositions – film screenings, and literary readings (including the regular Sunday Stories literary series). Beyond acting as the base for the Prison Library Support Network, we regularly host our wonderful organizing partners at Cuidate Collective.

Building on the growing network explained above, the loft provides opportunities for professional development and access to a public audience. By hosting inclusive group art shows and performers, we have brought together a diverse collection of artists and their respective communities. All sales facilitated in the loft go directly to the artists – including to commissary funds and legal defense, and we make all attempts to keep Lunita Loft as a no to low-cost venue for everyone who wants to use it. Artists and performers set their own prices, and their ability to take home all proceeds furthers their professional growth and visibility. We look forward to continuing to grow this space and expand its lineup of events and projects in years to come.

In 2026, we have had the amazing opportunity to fundraise for the loft – bolstered by a matching opportunity that adds $5 to every $1 donated!! More info on our fundraiser (including how to donate) here.
