In October 2022, I took over a loft in my apartment building. Since its founding, Lunita Loft has acted as a multi-purpose, mutual-aid driven community space. Lunita Loft has hosted every type of community events – including art shows, performances, workshops, classes, maker fairs, readings, and more. We have also hosted over 150 guests from all over the world.
Lunita Loft’s mission is to:
Lunita Loft’s official mission is to:
- provide an accessible platform for local and incarcerated artists
- host meeting spaces for local volunteer organizations and community groups (we are the official physical home-base for the Prison Library Support Network.)
- act as a non-profit venue for performing artists, photographers, and other artistic professionals
Lunita Loft has hosted numerous art shows featuring the work of local artists (including several photography shows, one art show in honor of women’s history month, an art show raising awareness and funds for incarcerated artist Shelly Levy, and numerous art shows in collaboration with the Here & Now Art Collective), several performances – including a debut of traditional string compositions, a holiday Maker’s fair, film screenings, and literary readings. Lunita Loft has also hosted numerous in-person events and gatherings for Prison Library Support Network volunteers.
Building on the growing network explained above, the loft provides opportunities for professional development and access to a public audience. In the shared quote by local photographer Isaiah Bland, the loft has been a first-time venue for many artists. By hosting inclusive group shows, we have brought together a diverse collection of artists and their respective communities. All sales facilitated in the loft have gone directly to the artists – including to an incarcerated artist’s commissary fund. Artists set their own prices, and their ability to take home all proceeds furthers their professional growth and visibility. We look forward to continuing to grow this loft space and expand its lineup of events and projects.
